Batik is an ancient textile art form going back 2000 years. Originating in China, it developed into a highly decorative art form in Indonesia during the 12th Century. It is a resist technique using melted wax and water based dyes on cotton cloth. The batik is built up in layers of wax and colour; each time melted wax is painted on to protect the previous colour. The dyes are painted on from the lightest through to the darkest colour. Finally, when the Batik is complete, the wax is removed and the fabric is left with the design impregnated into the fibres of the cotton. More about Batik and our Giant Batik process |
